LIVING IN WYOMING
Wyoming was platted in 1869, when the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad reached the spot, and it took its name from Wyoming Township, which was settled by a group from Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley. The town has a colorful footnote in Minnesota history: in 1933, brewery heir William Hamm Jr. was released near Wyoming after his kidnappers collected a $100,000 ransom.
In 2008, the old Wyoming Township was divided up and annexed into the neighboring cities of Wyoming, Chisago City and Stacy. That’s why today’s city covers nearly 22 square miles and is close to an even split between in-town neighborhoods and rural land. You’ll find homes on regular city lots near the center of town and the I-35 interchange, as well as larger properties with more privacy and room for a garden, a shop or animals on the edges of the city.
The South Branch of the Sunrise River runs through Wyoming, and the paved Sunrise Prairie Regional Trail starts at the county line here, where it connects to Washington County’s Hardwood Creek Regional Trail, and runs about 21 miles north through Stacy and North Branch to Harris. Railroad Park, on the trail, has picnic tables, a water fountain and a bike repair stand. Each year the city celebrates Wyoming Stagecoach Day, a community event with vendors, food trucks and live music that benefits the local fire department.
Interstate 35 runs right past town, so the drive to St. Paul is typically around 35 minutes and Minneapolis is a bit farther, depending on traffic. Forest Lake’s shopping, restaurants and services are only a few minutes south, and the Chisago Lakes area is a short drive east on Highway 8. For a lot of buyers, that combination is the draw: room to spread out, with the interstate and a larger town right next door.

What the percentages mean: the percentage beside each school below is the share of Wyoming’s children of that school’s age who live in its attendance area — ages 5–10 for elementary, 11–13 for middle and 14–17 for high school (about 614, 357 and 520 children in the 2020 Census). District percentages use all children ages 5–17. It shows where the city’s kids are assigned; it is not a test score or a rating.
