LIVING IN CHISAGO CITY

Chisago City was founded in May 1857 by Anders Swenson, a Swedish immigrant from Småland, during a wave of settlement from Sweden’s Kronoberg County. When the railroad’s Taylors Falls branch came through in 1880 and bypassed the original settlement a mile to the south, the town moved north to meet it. Chisago City incorporated as a village in 1906, and a statue of Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg, whose novels about emigrants were set in this area, stands downtown.

The city calls itself the “Gateway to the Lakes,” and it sits between Chisago Lake and Green Lake. Housing ranges from lake homes and lake-view properties to older homes near downtown and newer neighborhoods built as the city nearly doubled in population between 2000 and 2010. Part of the former Wyoming Township was also annexed into Chisago City in 2008, adding more land on the city’s edges. Downtown has antique shops, cafés and a farmers market.

Chisago City has nine parks. Moberg Park, with its train-themed playground, is the town’s central gathering spot, Chuckie Lundquist Park has a skate area, ice rinks and paved trails, and Paradise Park offers swimming, picnicking and the Chisago Lakes Triathlon. Ojiketa Regional Park adds 70 acres of woods, a sandy beach and hiking trails. Each August, Ki-Chi-Saga Days brings more than 100 vendors, concerts, fireworks, a fishing contest and a Sunday parade. The lakes are popular for fishing year-round, including ice fishing in winter.

U.S. Highway 8 runs through town and connects to I-35 at Forest Lake, so the drive to downtown St. Paul is usually around 45 minutes, with Minneapolis a bit farther depending on traffic. Wyoming and Forest Lake are close for everyday shopping, and Lindström and the rest of the Chisago Lakes area are just down the road.
