LINDSTRÖM, MN REALTOR · LOCAL GUIDE

LIVING IN LINDSTRÖM

Lindström was settled mostly by Swedish immigrants, beginning with Daniel Lindstrom, who arrived from Sweden in 1853 looking for land. The town was platted in 1880, incorporated as a village in 1894 and became a city in 1908. Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg drew on this area for his novels about emigrants Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson, and their statues downtown still draw visitors from around the world. Lindström is a sister city of Tingsryd, Sweden, and the town still leans into that heritage, earning it the nickname America’s Little Sweden.

The city’s most recognizable landmark is the coffee pot water tower in Kaffe Kanna Park. When Lindström built a new water tower in 1992, the old one was saved and turned into what’s billed as the world’s largest Swedish coffee pot, and it now steams twice a day in summer. Downtown has boutique shops, restaurants and the well-known Lindström Bakery, and the Chisago Lakes Water Trail is a popular spot for a scenic walk.

Lindström is almost entirely surrounded by water. South Lindstrom Lake, North Lindstrom Lake, South Center Lake, North Center Lake and Kroon Lake make it popular for fishing and boating, and housing ranges from lakeshore homes to in-town homes near downtown. Each July, Karl Oskar Days brings parades, a street dance and fireworks, and the Chisago Lakes Golf Course is nearby. In winter, the same lakes draw ice anglers.

U.S. Highway 8 runs through town and meets I-35 at Forest Lake, so the drive to downtown St. Paul is usually around 45 minutes to an hour, with Minneapolis a bit farther depending on traffic. Chisago City and Center City are just minutes away, and Taylors Falls and the St. Croix River are a short drive east.
