LIVING IN ISANTI
Isanti takes its name from the Dakota words for “knife” and “camp,” a nod to the Santee Dakota people who lived in the area. The first settlement had a post office by 1865, and in 1901 the village moved to its current site to be on the Great Northern Railway. A few buildings from those early days still stand downtown, including the old Isanti Farmers Creamery building and City Hall.
The city has grown quickly over the past few decades. Isanti went from about 2,300 residents in 2000 to more than 5,200 in 2010 and about 6,800 in 2020, so a lot of its neighborhoods are newer, with an older grid of streets near downtown. The Rum River runs along the west side of town, and the city maintains 261 acres of parks and natural areas with more than 29 miles of trails and walkways.
Bluebird Park is the city’s largest at 65 acres, with a nine-field soccer complex, a skate park, ball fields and an indoor BMX track. Riverside Park, River Bluff Preserve and Rum River Meadows put you close to the river, and smaller neighborhood parks like Unity Park, Legacy Park and Mattson Park are spread around town. Every July, Isanti Rodeo & Jubilee Days brings a parade, a PRCA rodeo, a community day and fireworks.
Highway 65 is the main route in and out of town, running south through East Bethel, Ham Lake and Blaine toward Minneapolis. Most people drive to Minneapolis in under an hour, depending on traffic and where in the metro they’re headed, and Cambridge, the county seat, is just a few miles north for shopping and services. Living in Isanti means a small-town downtown and quick access to the river and trails, with the north metro’s jobs and shopping within reach to the south.

District percentages use all children ages 5–17. It shows where the city’s kids are assigned; it is not a test score or a rating.
