ANDOVER, MN REALTOR · LOCAL GUIDE
LIVING IN ANDOVER
Andover was first organized in 1857 as Round Lake Township, then renamed Grow Township in 1860 after Congressman Galusha A. Grow. The Andover name came from a stop on the Great Northern Railway’s Eastern Minnesota line, built through the area around 1899 — not, as local legend has it, from a train that tipped “over and over.” The community incorporated as the Village of Andover in 1972 and became a city in 1974.
Parks are a big part of life here. The city has 69 parks and four open space properties, including 136-acre Kelsey Round Lake Park for hiking and skiing. Bunker Hills Regional Park, about 1,600 acres, starts in Andover’s southeast corner and offers golf, the Bunker Beach water park, an archery range, camping and miles of trails. Rum River Central Regional Park sits just off the northwest corner, and the Central Anoka County and Rum River regional trails both pass through town. Crooked Lake, on the southern border, is the city’s recreational lake.
The city plans for two distinct kinds of neighborhoods. Inside its Municipal Urban Service Area, homes are on city sewer and water in suburban subdivisions; outside it, rural residential areas keep a more open, country feel with private wells and septic. Every July, the Andover Family Fun Fest brings a parade, a 5K, live music, a craft show and fireworks to the City Hall campus.
For commuting, County Roads 9, 18, 78 and 116 are the main routes through town, with US Hwy 10 just to the south. Downtown Minneapolis is roughly 20 to 25 miles away, and downtown Anoka is a few minutes west. With so much parkland and a mix of suburban and rural settings, Andover appeals to a wide range of buyers.

ANDOVER SCHOOLS
Andover is served by two public school districts. Anoka-Hennepin School District 11, Minnesota’s largest district, covers roughly the southern four-fifths of the city, and St. Francis Area Schools (District 15) covers the northern part.
Most Andover students attend Anoka-Hennepin schools, including Andover High School, which is located in the city; Anoka-Hennepin elementary schools in Andover include Rum River Elementary. Students in the northern part of the city are in the St. Francis district. Because the district line runs through Andover, I confirm the district for every home my clients consider.
What the percentages mean: the percentage beside each school below is the share of Andover’s children of that school’s age who live in its attendance area — ages 5–10 for elementary, 11–13 for middle and 14–17 for high school (about 2,797, 1,573 and 2,285 children in the 2020 Census). District percentages use all children ages 5–17. It shows where the city’s kids are assigned; it is not a test score or a rating. Students per grade is each school’s 2025–26 enrollment divided by the number of grades it serves.
School districts serving Andover: Anoka-Hennepin (ISD 11) — about 96% of the city’s school-age children; St. Francis (ISD 15) — about 4% of the city’s school-age children.
