LIVING IN ST. FRANCIS
St. Francis grew up around the Rum River. In 1855, Dwight Woodbury built a dam, a grist and saw mill and the first house here, which later became the Riverside Hotel. The township was organized in 1857, and the name traces back to Father Louis Hennepin, who named the Rum River after St. Francis of Assisi in 1680. A large mill went up in 1888, and the mill and dam were lost to a fire in 1933. St. Francis incorporated as a village in 1962 and became a city in 1974.
The river is still a big part of daily life. Rum River North County Park, on Rum River Boulevard, has a canoe and kayak launch, a fishing pier, a playground, trails and canoe-in campsites. The city keeps its own parks and trails too, and Lake George is a short drive south in Oak Grove.
St. Francis has served as a commercial hub for northern Anoka County and southern Isanti County, with shopping, dining and a farmers market. Pioneer Days, which started in 1964, is the city’s summer celebration, with a parade and events in the park. The city is also home to the Land of Lakes Choirboys. St. Francis has its own school district, ISD 15, with St. Francis High School on Bridge Street, and the city’s population has grown to about 8,400 by the city’s own estimate.
Highway 47 is the main route through town, along with Ambassador Boulevard. Anoka is about 16 miles south, and Minneapolis is roughly 35 miles away. Neighborhoods range from in-town streets near the river to homes on larger lots toward the city’s rural edges, and nearby Bethel, Oak Grove and East Bethel add more country living within a few miles.
