LIVING IN MOUNDS VIEW

Mounds View started as a township organized in 1858 and incorporated as a village exactly 100 years later, in 1958. Growth after World War II was driven partly by the nearby Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant, and the city filled in with neighborhoods over the following decades. In 2005 the city sold its golf course, The Bridges of Mounds View, to Medtronic, which opened a major campus there in 2007. Mounds View has been a Tree City USA since 1987.

For a city of about 13,200 people on just over 4 square miles, there’s a lot packed in. Rice Creek flows through the southeastern part of town, the city maintains a network of walking and biking trails, and Silver View Park serves as a central gathering spot. The biggest community event is Mounds View Festival in the Park, first held in 1975 and now an annual August tradition run by a local nonprofit, with a parade, car show, live music, kids’ activities and fireworks. Indoor options like Zero Gravity Adventure Park and Mermaid Entertainment & Event Center keep things busy in winter.

Neighborhoods are mostly established single-family streets, with commercial areas along Mounds View Boulevard. The city borders Shoreview, Arden Hills, New Brighton, Fridley, Spring Lake Park and Blaine, and I-35W and U.S. Highway 10 make it easy to reach both downtowns — Minneapolis is usually about 20 minutes away and St. Paul about 20 to 25 minutes.

The city’s compact size is part of its appeal: parks, schools, shopping and the freeway are all close together, and Medtronic’s campus brings a major employer within a few minutes of home. Mounds View also has a busy parks and recreation department, and the city has recently put a parks bond referendum in front of voters.
